Mia Moretti ♥'s Piece & Co.
Piece & Co. and Mia Moretti joined forces to create an exclusive Summer 2017 capsule that intertwines beach fashion and global impact, featuring organic, hand-crafted products sustainably produced by female-led artisan groups in Kenya and India. The limited-edition collection will be available exclusively on MiaMoretti.com for one week launching July 27th.
A partnership by women for women featuring sustainable and organic materials for the beach, the collection was born with the spirit to honor the body and mind. The hand-crocheted bikini and tote are created from 100% organic cotton by female artisans in Kenya, and the beach towel is loomed out of 100% organic cotton by artisans in India.
Female artisans around the world are the backbones of their communities, responsible for raising children and providing for families. Piece & Co. was founded with the mission to empower women around the world through sustainable work and bringing their craft to life. The artisans that crocheted the bikini and tote for this collection are based in Nakuru, Kenya. In this region of Kenya, 1.5 million children have been left orphaned due to the devastation of the AIDS epidemic.
Many of the women in the artisan collective were widowed by the AIDS epidemic and are the sole source of income for their families. With supporting their community at heart, the cooperative gives back a percentage of the revenue from every order to an orphanage that provides a haven for 25 children who would otherwise live alone on the streets. The orphanage provides shelter, food, healthcare, psychological and emotional support, as well as education up to college.
Through this collaboration, 20 crochet artisans were employed for almost one month.
One of the crocheting artisans partners in Kenya, which is all women-led, named Ann gave a bit of her experience on the project. Ann is a single mother of two. She was so excited to be a part of this project. Even though Ann is happy go lucky, she has been through so much hardship and impoverished conditions to the point of going without food. Her single most prayer is that the project goes on so that she has a consistent source of income. Ann, is very driven and works very hard.
The story above is just one of the many stories of women working for women, in this collaboration, as well as Piece & Co. artisan partners as a whole. Mia Moretti and Kathleen Wright went to Miami Swim Week to discuss the immense opportunities for sustainability progress within the fashion industry and reinforcing that when women help women magic happens.
