Introducing the Piece & Co. Fall 2018 Collection
The vibrant foliage in our artisan partners’ countrysides inspire the Piece & Co. Fall 2018 Collection. The richness of the earth during the transformative changing of the seasons lends itself to the color palette comprised of rust, goldenrod, olive, burgundy, and indigo - a natural kaleidoscope.
The beauty of the Fall 2018 collection begins at the fiber. Piece & Co. is proud to produce the Fall Collection with predominantly Organic Cotton. Additionally, Piece & Co. is now working with recycled cottons to give new life to scraps and offcuts that would traditionally be discarded. Organic cotton is treated with natural dyes, from deep maroons inspired by the Mexican dahlia to the bright whites of organic cotton in India, and everything in between. In India, our artisan partners have an incredible range of capabilities in naturally dyeing organic cotton and weaving capabilities by way of the power loom. This artisan group not only obtained one of the most rigorous social compliance certifications, SA 8000, but is also a woman-led collective.
Our artisan partners in India also incorporate the art of shibori into creating beautiful fabrics. Shibori is commonly used when working with 100% silk, one of our preferred renewable and biodegradable fibers. In the Fall 2018 collection, shibori is a composition of royal blues and deep mauve tones and can be custom dyed to any pantone shade of your choice.
Our artisan partner groups in Ghana specialize in a technique that dates back 2,000 years: hand painted batik. The hand painted batik artisans of Ghana are part of a woman-owned collective that provides textile training and create a necessary and sustainable source of employment for the local community. The hand painted batik fabrics can be custommade, and are presented in the Fall 2018 collection with rich earthy tones, in deep coppers and russet palettes.
The hand painting artisans of Zambia are a source of inspiration for our umber shades in the collection. Our artisan partners in Zambia specialize in the technique called hand painted crackle, with each piece drawn and painted by hand with a starch solution and then dried by the sun creating the crackle effect. The results are one of a kind, exquisite fabrics. This cooperative has transformed their community. Through their work, the artisans co-founded the first local school, which educates over 160 children from the local community.
Many of the knits in our Fall 2018 collection were made using the back strap loom. Our artisan partners in Peru work with Alpaca fibers to weave complex and beautiful designs. The woman-led collective was created to support the production and business development of artisans while also fostering ancient Peruvian textile weaving techniques. The beautifully woven pieces contain the rich earthy fall colors that moved us as we transition into Autumn.
The result of the juxtaposition for the Fall 2018 collection, an array of intricate artisanal techniques and rich color ways, is all truly inspired by the incredible artisan partners that we at Piece & Co. are so honored to work with everyday.
